How To Protect Yourself From Identity Theft
Protecting yourself from identity theft has become a full time job in this economy, with more and more thieves looking to take the easy way out by stealing someone else’s identity. There are certain measures you can take to make sure you’re well protected from identity theft. These measures include securing yourself online, so you’re not using dangerous websites or other programs which could cause you to lose your personal information.
First and foremost, never open an email from someone you don’t know. If you don’t know the recipient or you’re not expecting an email from someone of that name or business, you should consider the email spam and delete it. More often than not, people get their identities stolen when they open foreign programs which contain things like trojans and give the thieves access to your computer’s cookies. This email tip extends to website downloads as well. Never download something from a website unless you are absolutely sure as to what it is. You could end up getting trojans or viruses which could result in your identity getting stolen.
Never click on links which are available in your email unless you are absolutely 100% sure they are from the original sender. Many thieves set up phishing websites which resemble a real legitimate website like PayPal or Chase in order to try and get you to enter your username and password on their site so they will have access to your name and password. If you’re not sure if the email you received actually came from your financial institution, you should discard it and go to the website directly to avoid getting phished.
Last, make sure you’re no longer using Internet Explorer 6. It is a very old version of Internet Explorer which contains several loopholes and flaws which could result in your identity being stolen.
